![]() The names of the streets and buildings on the base reflect it’s the history and tradition of the US Navy and submarine force. The Pentagon recommended closing the base in 2005 however, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission removed the Naval Submarine Base New London from the list of closures. Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1982, the Nautilis is moored near the main gate as part of the US Submarine Force Museum where visitors can take self-guided tours through the historic sub. In January 1954, the USS Nautilis, the first nuclear-powered submarine, was launched from the Naval Submarine Base New London. After the Great War, schools and training facilities were established. In 1916, it was named the Navy’s first official submarine base. More submarines arrived the next year, as the war in Europe and the Atlantic was underway. In the fall of 1915, four submarines and a monitor arrived at the Naval Submarine Base New London. In 1912, the Navy commissioned the first diesel-powered submarine at the Naval Submarine Base New London. Until World War I, the new naval yard was used mainly for coaling small vessels in the Atlantic Fleet. It was 1872 before the federal government could afford to build a couple of brick buildings and a pier. When the Alaska arrives, it will be the third boat at Kings Bay that has been refueled.The State of Connecticut gave the US Navy over 100 acres of land for a naval station on the banks of the Thames River in 1868. ![]() But one boat, the USS Tennessee, is now in the Norfolk shipyards undergoing a similar refueling. On paper, eight Ohio-class submarines are ported at Kings Bay. Marys Mayor Rowland Eskridge said the Alaska’s arrival will help boost the local economy, which has been struggling. “We want to have both crews there,” she said. Daniel said she is seeking donations for a picnic planned after May’s ceremony splitting the crews. The boat now has a supply of fuel that will power the Alaska’s nuclear reactor the next 20 years. The crews swap about once every 100 days.ĭuring its time in Norfolk, only one crew was assigned to the boat while it underwent a refueling overhaul. While one 165-man crew is at sea, the other undergoes training on base. Two crews are assigned to the boat to maximize its time at sea preforming its role as a key deterrent to nuclear war. An Assumption of Command Ceremony will be held sometime in May to split the sailors assigned to the boat into two crews, Blue and Gold, Rebarich said. The crew has already completed sea trials to test the boat’s performance and seaworthiness before it returns to duty. The boat’s crew will be greeted by immediate family members and invited guests. Rebecca Rebarich, said submarine arrivals and departures are classified and she cannot give the date when the 560-foot nuclear submarine will arrive. The Alaska will arrive at its new duty station, Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, sometime next month.
